Francis was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was born in Gainesville, Florida, and grew up across North Florida, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and a natural curiosity about how things worked. He graduated from Columbia High School in Lake City, Florida.
He attended Auburn University, where he met Billie Jo Gordon, and later served in the United States Coast Guard as a navigator and communications officer in aerial search and rescue missions. Francis and Billie Jo were married for 56 years. Together, they raised two children, Julianne (Andrew) and Christopher (Shelly), and were proud grandparents to Sylvia, Oliver, and Connor. He also shared a close bond with Robert Hurst, a brother in all but name.
After earning his engineering degree from the University of South Florida, Francis began his career in industry in Florida, where he worked on improving plant systems and processes. He later spent the majority of his career at the Kennedy Space Center. Known for his hands-on approach and strong sense of responsibility, Francis supported the facilities and cranes that processed satellites and spacecraft.
Francis lived with quiet integrity and steady determination. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, solving puzzles, and staying active, and he carried a lifelong commitment to strength and discipline. He spent many years exploring the forests of North Florida, developing a deep familiarity with the land and a connection to the wildlife, particularly bears.
Above all, he was a dependable and steady presence for his family, always willing to help, share knowledge, and show up when needed. He found great joy in time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Francis will be remembered for his kindness, strength of character, and deep sense of duty.
A Celebration of Francis' Life will be held on April 18, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Florida Wildlife Corridor.
