James Ray Western, Jr. passed peacefully into Glory on November 27, 2025 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind a life of legacy and love. Born in Biloxi, Mississippi on May 8, 1951, he grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee where he attended Central High School, class of 1969. There, he was awarded an appointment to the USAF Academy which drastically changed the trajectory of his life. After graduation, he began 10 years of active duty which included piloting the C-130 Hercules aircraft. Jim then began his career in the business world, working at Aircraft Porous Media, Moog Inc. and Pall Corp. where he became President of Pall Aerospace and Senior VP of Pall Corp. He also continued serving his country in the AF Reserves for 20 years at Socom, MacDill and retired with rank of Lt. Colonel.
Jim continued his love of service with Operation Standdown, a nonprofit organization that gives aid to homeless and at-risk veterans. Because of his leadership and involvement, Standdown now serves over 500 vets each year, helping to supply medical, dental, legal, financial, and shelter assistance.
The births of his 2 sons were his most cherished moments. Such was his devotion to them, he was sure to be at every ballgame, concert, birthday, graduation and special event in spite of his constant travel. They filled his life with love, joy, chaos and noise and were the joy of his life!
Bluegrass and gospel music always brought a smile to his face as he played guitar and mandolin with a small group of friends. He was an avid sports and fitness enthusiast and a best friend to his family’s many dogs. Travel, whether work or leisure, was a way of life and an adventure to discover.
Jim leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Karen Smith, 2 devoted sons, Brent James (wife Angie) and Brandon Reid (wife Michelle), his precious grandchildren, Brady James and Lauren Louise, along with many special extended family members. Jim’s deep love of his wife and sons will continue to strengthen, guide and comfort in the future. He will be remembered for his selfless service to our country and devotion to his family and faith which will forever continue to embrace our lives.
