Ruth Nadine Greer, aged 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 9, 2023, in Clearwater, Florida. She was born on October 17, 1925, in Rockland, Maine, the beloved daughter of Erwin and Kay Spear. Ruth pursued her education at Gorham State University of Maine, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Education.
In 1948, Ruth married Arthur Gordon Greer from Sanford, Maine. She embarked on a dedicated teaching career, spending five years in several elementary schools throughout Maine before relocating to Oswego, New York. In Oswego, she continued her teaching journey for 28 years. During this time, her husband, Arthur, a college professor, had an opportunity to contribute to the US government's efforts in improving manufacturing processes in Saigon, Vietnam. The Greer family resided in Saigon from 1963 to 1965, where Ruth continued her passion for education by teaching 3rd grade.
She eventually retired in 1982. Following retirement, she and Arthur decided to make Safety Harbor, Florida, their home. Ruth actively participated in the North Bay Community Church, dedicating her time as a devoted church volunteer. Additionally, she was an enthusiastic tournament bridge player and found joy in nurturing her garden. Remarkably, even at the age of 90, she spread 44 bags of mulch around her four-bedroom home herself.
Ruth is survived by her two loving sons, Gary Greer and his wife Debbie of Safety Harbor, Florida, and Richard Greer and his wife Liz of Highlands, North Carolina, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Anne Fox and Tom Greer, and her great-grandchild, Elly. Ruth's memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and her legacy as an educator and active community member will be remembered with fondness and gratitude.
