Winston-Salem- Mr. Clive Donald Miller, 87, died at his home on August 22, 2013. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 26, at Fairview Moravian Church at 2 PM with Pastor Scott Venable officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1:45 PM prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Clive was born in Forsyth County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Julius and Gladys Fansler Miller. He attended Hanes School and at the age of 15 joined the Marines only to be sent home from Parris Island when they learned he was underage. Clive, determined to serve his country, then joined the US Navy and served proudly during World War II. After his military service he married his sweetheart, Opal York, whom he met while she was waitressing at the Woolworth in Winston-Salem. For almost 67 years they have raised a family and created so many wonderful memories.
Clive was a member of Messiah Moravian Church for almost fifty years where he served in various positions including that of acolyte and for the past four years has been an active and faithful member of Fairview Moravian Church where he participated in the Weber Sunday School Class. He was a man of great faith and student of the Bible which was evident in his daily life. Clive was a loving and affectionate person who took great interest in the very spirits of people. He was a volunteer chaplain at Forsyth Medical Center because he had a heart for serving others. He loved his family and raised his children in a loving Christian home and has left a legacy of caring and strength. Granddaddy took great pride in his great grandchildren and loved just “hanging out” and talking with them, probably learning as much from them as they did from him. He was a jack of all trades and enjoyed repairing and keeping up his rental properties and when he wanted to “get away” he escaped to his mountain hide-away off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Clive worked at Dairy Fresh for over twenty years as a maintenance mechanic where he was loved and respected by his co-workers. He was a member of the Iwo Jima survivors group and sang with his Christian friends in The Group.
He is survived by his wife, Opal York Miller; daughters and their spouses, Judy and John Snyder of Winston-Salem and Joyce and John Holton of Cooleemee; four grandchildren, Joel (Michelle) Norris, Hope (Wesley) Shoaf, Mandy Norris, and Martin (Marie) Harrison; and seven precious great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Sonny Miller in 1996 and four siblings.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the kindness and compassion of their dear friend and neighbor, Steve Clodfelter who tirelessly ran errands, did chores and served the family through Clive’s illness. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the choir fund at Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
