He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann McLester Schachtschneider.
He leaves behind two daughters: Khristin Schachtschneider (Kyle Covey) and Heidi Schachtschneider as well as extended family and many, many friends made over the years.
Erich loved to travel-In his youth, with his family, and with his wife on cruises to Alaska, Norway, South America, and Panama. His travels took him to over 40 countries.
When he was just a baby, he took his first journey when his family emigrated from Poland to Argentina.
Other journeys followed with his decision to pursue a career in textiles: Germany, Puerto Rico, upstate NY, and, ultimately, North Carolina.
Erich was adventurous, obviously, and courageous. This was evidenced by his move to the US in 1962: new life, new language. With his usual good humor, he greeted each new challenge and experience and made friends wherever he went.
He was friendly, open, charming, and magnetic. He could be quite garrulous if you got him talking about the textile industry, his life in Argentina, or the years he had his pilot’s license.
Erich had a mechanical mind and lots of ingenuity. He loved to tinker and was a real MacGyver. In later years, this ability was used to create his extensive Christmas light display at his home in Peppertree each year.
He had integrity and cared deeply for people. He always wanted to help someone. His church and faith were very important to him. He was especially proud of the times he used that helpfulness and his faith on his mission trips to Honduras. He would tell anyone that listened that he loved the Lord.
The family will receive friends for a visitation Friday from 12:30pm - 1:30pm at Frank
Vogler & Sons in Clemmons. The graveside service will be held following the visitation at 2pm at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to American Red Cross.
