
Dr. Case was committed to education throughout his professional life. He taught high school English in Winchester and Brookline, Massachusetts, trained teachers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and was director of the Institute for Learning and Teaching at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He served as the commonwealth’s director of teacher certification before rising to the associate commissioner position.
Later, Dr. Case was dean of the Empire State College campus, State University of New York, in Hartsdale, New York. He also worked closely with students—most of them adult learners—at Empire State. After retiring from Empire State in 2000 and moving to Texas, he served as an adjunct faculty member at several local universities, involved primarily in teacher education.
Born in New York City in 1935, Dr. Case was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Hamilton, New York. He was educated at the Millbrook School (class of 1953), Princeton University (class of 1957), and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1969). He lived most of his adult life in Cambridge, later residing in White Plains, N.Y.; Southampton, Mass.; Spring, Texas; and Clemmons. A grandson of Owen D. Young, he maintained a vacation home for many years in Van Hornesville, N.Y.
In his personal life, Jim was well known for his love of camping, his love of literature, and his beer waffles. His friends and family appreciated his independent, helpful nature and his sense of humor, which he retained to the last.
He is survived by his wife, Cindri Carrick Case, of Clemmons, and by five children: Peter Gill Case, of Providence, R.I.; Matthew Case, of Chapel Hill, N.C. Jessica Case, of Cody, Wyo.; Emily Case, of Shutesbury, Mass.; and Joanna Case Famadas, of Newton, Mass. He is also survived by two brothers, Sam Case, of Fairfax, California, and John Case, of Cambridge, as well as by 13 grandchildren.
