Jerome was born March 11, 1935, in Manning, SC to Cohen and Edelle Walker. After high school, he joined the Air Force and moved to Texas, where he met his future wife Dorothy Fern Walton. After his discharge from the military and his marriage, he and his family eventually moved back to the east coast, settling in Winston-Salem where he took a job on the cleaning crew at Western Electric (which would become AT&T Technologies). He completed an 18-month correspondence course in draftsmanship while working additional odd jobs to support his family. He eventually became a technical illustrator at the same company. Through on-the-job training and technical school, he became a specialist in both telecommunications and oceanography, specializations that carried him to almost every part of the globe.
Jerome was active in St Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and raised his children by example to be hard-working, responsible, and charitable. Those who knew him knew that he would rarely refuse to help someone in need.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his sisters Mary Ida, Persephone and Ruth Ola; his brother Edwin; his daughter Yolanda; his son Jerome L. Walker II and wife Jennifer, along with their children Jerome III and Janelle; his son Raphael; his son Michael and wife Jinghua, along with their children Sophia and Mia; his daughter Rhea; many nieces and nephews; and many other loved ones and friends.
A celebration mass will be held Saturday, February 20th at 12 noon at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Father Stephen Hoyt officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening February 19th
