Joan M. Whelen

Mrs. Joan Whelen, 80, died January 25 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in New York, NY. She was a homemaker, and later worked in a local bank as a Branch Vice President. She retired in 1989 and relocated to North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Robert Gerard and her brother, Arthur McCluskey. She is survived by 6 children, Mary Beth (Tim) Flavin, Kathy Whelen, Joanne (Jim) Parcell, Robert (Melissa) Whelen, John (Michelle) Whelen, and Jim (Megan) Whelen; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Barbara McCluskey.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Fr. Brian Cook, on Tuesday January 29, 11:00 am, at St. Leo Catholic Church, where Mrs. Whelen was an active member and a former choir member. The family will receive friends on Monday January 28, 5:00-9:00 pm, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel. Interment will follow funeral Forsyth Memorial Park.
