Carolyn Lorber passed out of this life at the age of 94 with the same grace with which she lead hers, dying peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday night. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Barnes, II, of Macon, Georgia where she was born on August 8th, 1916. May Queen of the City of Macon at the age of 12 and later marrying with what was widely known as the smallest waist in two counties, she never let her beauty, background or intelligence interfere with her easy charm and interest in others. She had met her future husband, Dr. Martin Lorber, now deceased, at a fraternity party at Auburn and it was he with the first introduction to Winston-Salem through Dr. Charles Norfleet, whom he had met in China during World War II. It was she with the second introduction via her mother who knew Mary Reynolds Babcock, which is why their first home here was the old polo clubhouse on Polo Road when they moved here in 1946. She is survived by her brother, Mr. D. A. Barnes, III, of Oakwood, Georgia, two sons, Martin of New York and Palm Beach and Robert of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Giraud of New York, Augusta of Palm Beach, Robert of Marion and Brent of Winston-Salem, plus three nieces and three great-granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Centenary Methodist Church this Wednesday, October 13st, at 3:00. The family has requested no flowers, but would appreciate kind gestures of donations to Hospice and Palliative Care in Winston-Salem.
