WINSTON-SALEM 11/30/1923 - 03/04/2018 Lucille Newman Thomas, 94, passed away surrounded by her loving family at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem on Sunday, March 4, 2018. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 7, at 2 PM at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Rd, with Reverend Laura Lee Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 PM to 2 PM prior to the service. Interment will take place at Forsyth Memorial Park. Lucille was born on November 30, 1923, in Fancy Gap, Virginia as the only child to adoring parents Chester and Rebecca Newman. She grew up in Winston-Salem, where she would go on to meet her future husband, Warren "Chub" Thomas, at R.J. Reynolds High School. Warren and Lucille were married for 67 years. Lucille was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 67 years, having joined as the 113th member. She and Warren loved spending weekends with their children and grandchildren at their vacation home in Orchard Gap, VA. During the week, they were loyal members of the Hanes Mall Walkers "club." Lucille was an avid reader, exceptional cook, and, above all, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. All of her grandchildren will miss their "Mama Cindy" and everyone who knew her will miss her big heart, sweet smile, and signature welcome: "Hi do!" Lucille is survived by her three daughters and their families, Debbie Barber and husband Jim of Springtown, TX and their children, Jennifer and husband Jake, Vanessa, and Rosie; Donna Drane of Winston-Salem and her children, Misti and Katie and husband Tyler; and Dawn Grubbs and husband Kent of Winston-Salem and their children, Lyndsey and Drew; and five great-grandchildren. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter Vicky Lynn, and a dear son-in-law, Tony Drane. The family is grateful for the care, love, and services of the wonderful staff at Arbor Acres.
