Winston-Salem- Mr. Mervyn Woodward, 80, passed away on June 2, 2013 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, June 7, at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel.
Born in Bristol, England to the late Ewart Henry and Annie Pullin Woodward, served with the British Army from 1954-1956 and during that time was stationed in Egypt. On July 31, 1954 married Julia Bowley and in 1967 came to the United States. Mervyn will be remembered as a person who never knew a lazy day. He would always have a project going whether it was repairing something, tinkering with cars, or woodworking, and he passed what he knew about anything on to everyone. He had a heart of gold, a great sense of humor and loved to help others. He loved his grandchildren dearly and was a supporter of everything they were involved with. He was at every sport or school function and would help them after school with their homework as he wanted them to value the importance of education as much as he did. His grandchildren will remember the many trips they took over the years in country and overseas. He loved the beach, enjoyed entertaining at his home and having homemade boat races on the lake. Mervyn was instrumental in the formation of the Optimist Soccer Club in Winston-Salem. He was an engineer and was employed with Lockheed, GE, Westinghouse, and AMP.
In addition to his wife Julia B. Woodward of the home he is survived by his sons, Christopher Noel Woodward and Andrew Glenn (Wendy Welborn) Woodward both of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Ian, Shannon, Corey, Megan, Heather; great grandchildren, Millie, Ashlyn, Kadence, and Elijah; brother Basil Woodward of England; and extended family and friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mervyn’s name to the Salvation Army, POB 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102. On line condolences may be made at www.frandvoglerandsons.com.
