Nelson Jones Davis, 87, of Kernersville, was divinely granted his wish expressed in his favorite gospel song, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" on June 7, 2012 where he transitioned peacefully at KBR Hospice Home. He had many favorite gospel tunes which took on personal meaning in his remaining days. Kidney disease proved to be most challenging as he and his family took "One Day At A Time". Now that he is "Farther Along", he has divine understanding and knowledge as alluded to in I Corinthians 13:12. (For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then, face to face: now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known.) He leaves behind "Precious Memories" to be cherished by his loving and dedicated family
Nelson was born in Yadkin County to Nancy Lillian and Houston J. Davis. They later relocated to Winston-Salem during his childhood. At age 16, he began a courtship with Elsie Whiteheart whom he met at church. Nelson was instantly captivated by Elsie's beauty, charm, and "pretty white teeth", in his words. It was also at this same age, that he responded to the gospel of Jesus Christ and accepted Him as his personal Savior. He went on to be elected as Senior Class President of the1943 graduating class of Hanes High School. Uncle Sam interrupted the budding romance between Elsie and him, and he dutifully served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army beginning on June 11, 1943. Nelson served in two theatres, the European, as well as the Pacific. He was trained in chemical warfare, and later served in the military police as a guard for Vice Admiral Alan Kirk. Altogether, he served his country for 32 months. After his discharge in February of 1946, he resumed his courtship and proposed to his homeland sweetheart, Elsie. Realizing her love for this man of integrity and character, she eagerly accepted. They were united in holy matrimony on June 29, 1946 and celebrated 65 years of marriage this past June. He was employed for many decades with the U.S. Postal Service. He was faithful in attendance at Fair Oaks Chapel, especially the Communion services; he also dutifully served as church Treasurer for many years. Among the things he enjoyed in his life were family, injecting his dry wit, gardening, tasty seafood, gospel music, his favorite season "Fall", Shatley Springs, K & W, The Lawrence Welk Show, and Fox News.
In September of 2011, he was privileged to participate in the "Triad Flight of Honor". Though infirmed, this late-life experience proved to be one of the highlights of his long life, as he shared a joyful homecoming with his fellow veterans.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elsie Whiteheart Davis, who loved him sacrificially and always put him first. He is also survived by his son, Nelson Douglas Davis, of Kernersville, and daughter, Denise Davis Shaw who both were highly involved in his care plan, along with her supportive husband, Simon, of Colfax, and their 2 daughters, Ashley and Meredith, who knew him as "Paw Paw".
The family would like to thank the following: Dr. Amret Hawfield, WFBH Nephrology, for maximizing his quality of life, the Hospice Home Health team , "Dr. Gen" Wroblewski, Nurses Jill Teasley and Deborah Kelley, CNA Yolanda Hartso, and social worker Jane Robbins for the help and comfort extended to Nelson and his family. Also heart-felt gratitude is extended to Arbor Ridge of Kernersville - Mary Genia Day, Maria Smith and her team of CNA's of Summit Care At Home who participated in Nelson's care, especially the exceptional team of "angels" who provided individual care: Val, Kristina, Brittany ("McArthur"), Amy, Ashley Kathryn, Shannon D., Shannon K., Emily P., Emily T., Sandy, Claire, Fatima, and Kelsey.
