Norman was born in Birmingham, AL to Grady Beal and Agnes Sloman Stephens. He grew up with three siblings, Bobbie Jean, Margaret Ann and younger brother, Jimmy. He was drafted in the US Army when he was 18 years old. By the time he was 19, he was sent to artillery school at Fort Sill, OK, where his unit was activated for overseas movement to Korea. Before his unit was moved out, peace was declared and the Korean War ended so he didn’t serve overseas. After being honorably discharged in 1955, he joined the National Guard and was promoted to Sergeant but eventually separated from Service. Norman’s strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit lead him to various jobs culminating in purchasing a Manufacturer’s Rep Agency, Executive Sales Partners. After retirement he continued to work part time well into his 70’s doing contract work.
On December 30, 1954, Norman married his 16-year-old bride, Christene Price, and had 66 years of a “mostly blissful” marriage which produced three children.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Agnes, his siblings, Bobbie, Margaret and Jimmy, and his son, Norman G. (Chuck) Stephens, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Christene Price Stephens, daughter, Robbie Gail Davis (Carl), son, David Stephens (Tina) and by his ten grandchildren: Ashley Davis Hayzlip (Tim), Matthew Davis (Stephanie), Brian Davis, Nathan Stephens, Rebekah Stephens Hild (Blaine), Jason Stephens, Shellie Stephens Fields (Blaine), Scott Stephens, Abbie Stephens, Ellie Stephens and six great grandchildren: Abbigail Davis, Madelyn Davis, Mackenzie Davis, Lucy Davis, Leah Stephens and Nash Fields. Visitation is immediately following the service at Frank Vogler and Son’s Funeral Home.
