
Robert John Sulek passed away at his home in Winston-Salem on September 12, 2023. He was born in Coaldale, Pennsylvania on July 5, 1947 to Frank M. Sulek and Margaret J. Sulek. He grew up in Levittown, NY and Winston-Salem. He graduated from Bishop McGuinness High School and John F. Kennedy College in Wahoo, Nebraska. While in college Robert served with the Wahoo Volunteer Fire Department along with several of his fellow students. Upon his return to Winston-Salem, Robert joined the Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department where he served for many years. He assisted on fire and rescue calls at all times of the day and night and in all kinds of weather. In recognition of his outstanding service he was twice voted Fireman of the Year by the Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department.
Robert enjoyed outdoor activities. When he was younger he liked to hunt and fish. He then became interested in organic gardening and spent many hours working in his large vegetable garden. Every year he shared a bounty of vegetables with his friends and neighbors. He is survived by his sister Joanne Utley and brother in law Robert Utley; cousin Christopher Harvan and wife Susie and cousin Joe Yurko. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, John Paul Sulek and cousin Christine Harvan and Richard Marvell. Robert worked in the warrant office for the City of Winston-Salem for many years. He was later employed by and retired from Hayward Industries in Clemmons.
A funeral service will be held at Frank Vogler and Sons in Clemmons at 11:30am on November 11, 2023. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Burial will immediately follow the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Forsyth County Fire Historical Society ([email protected]).
