
Russell A. Hunt, 89, a resident of Bermuda Village, Advance, NC died May 12, 2011 at his home. The cause of death was pneumonia. He was born in 1922 to Russell Aubrey Hunt and Miriam Horine Hunt in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he lived for three months before the family moved back to central Kentucky.
On April 12, 1947, Russell married Bessie Burris Hunt who survives him. They raised their three children in Griffith, Indiana: Gail Henry (Sam Francis) of Washington DC, Judy Hunt (David Wallace) of Winston-Salem, and Curtis Hunt (Cheryl) of Jeffersonville, Indiana. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Michael Henry, Margaret Henry, Kristen Caldwell, Elizabeth Wunker, Elizabeth Casimiro, and Ryan Hunt and two great-grandchildren; Caroline Caldwell and Gabriela Casimiro. His brother, Richard H. Hunt, preceded him in death.
While a teen, Russell earned the rank of Eagle Scout and attended the first National Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington DC in 1937 along with his father and brother. After graduating from Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky, he received his bachelors and masters degrees in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. In 1943, he joined the Standard Oil of Indiana Research & Development department as a research chemist in Whiting, Indiana where he obtained numerous patents as a result of his research. In the 1960s and 70s Russell helped design the new Amoco Research Center in Naperville, Illinois and coordinated the move of the entire research campus from Whiting. He retired in March, 1981 from Amoco and then worked for another year as a consultant to their architecture firm. He and his wife designed and built a new home in Hendersonville, NC in 1982. There he spent much of his time enjoying his four passions: gardening, golfing, making fine furniture, and spending time with his grandchildren. Russell and Bessie moved to Bermuda Village in 1996, where he became a member of the Clemmons United Methodist Church.
While in Indiana, Russell volunteered with the Lions Club, the local Griffith, Indiana Boy Scout Troop 531, the Griffith Girls’ Softball League and was active in the United Methodist Church. Russell has been a member of the American Chemical Society since 1943 and belonged to the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity, the American Petroleum Institute, and numerous genealogical and historical societies.
Vogler and Sons in Clemmons is serving the family. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the Winston-Salem Hospice and Palliative Care Center (101 Hospice Lane, W-S, 27103) or charity of choice.
