

Shirley was born in Roane County in Rockwood, TN on January 9, 1945 to the late, Thomas C. Carmichael and Mabel R. Carmichael. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Gilmer R. Griffin and three siblings; Tommy Carmichael, Bobby Carmichael, and June Honeycutt. Shirley received an Associate of Science Degree in Business Data Processing and Computer Science in 1983 from State Technical Institute, Knoxville, TN. She graduated valedictorian of her class. Using her degree she worked for Forsyth County as a third shift Systems Operator for 20 years until she retired. She liked volunteering for the Red Cross, Cub Scouts and raising money for sports fund raisers. She also enjoyed reading, exercising, bicycling, walking, crafts and needlework. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother. She was a woman that was dearly loved by everyone who knew her and was a Christian who loved and knew God.
She is survived by her two sons: Gregory R. Griffin and his wife Debbie of Walnut Cove, NC and David T. Griffin and his wife Kim of Myrtle Beach, SC. Brother Teddy Taylor and his wife Virginia of Michigan, and niece Sandra Butner and her husband Don of Florida. Her grandchildren: Ashley, Geoffrey, Dylan and Caden and great grandchildren: Quinton and Skylar. And her dear friend Tom Hailey.
A funeral service will be held 2 PM, Monday, March 21st in the Chapel of Frank Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Winston-Salem Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Shirley Carmichael Griffin.
