If you are reading this, I am deceased as of February 3, 2025. I was for 85 years, Tony R. Stovall born in Winston-Salem, NC on June 8, 1939, the youngest child of Christopher L. Stovall and Ollie Penry Stovall (both deceased). I had two brothers, Landis C. Stovall and Richard H. Stovall (both deceased) and Mary Francis Stovall Walker Smith (deceased). My early education was at the old Griffith School, like me now gone. In June 1956 I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and at that time never considering it as a career, however, I spent 20 years as a U.S. Marine serving my Country and Corps faithfully. During a tour of duty in Long Island I continued my education at Long Island University accumulating 3 years of college and after retirement from the Corps attending Forsyth Technical College for about 2 more years. In August of 1957 I married the love of my life and my best friend, Phyllis Roberta Garwood Stovall and for the next 67 years we were together in marriage traveling from east and west, north and south, except for unaccompanied tours of duty in Vietnam from March 1967 thru May 1968. Okinawa during 1975. In Vietnam I served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division (The Dark Horse Battalion).
Our marriage produced 4 children, Tony E. Stovall (wife Susan), Blake L. Stovall, Johanna Stovall Holt (husband Donnie), and Angela Stovall Gerdes (husband Eddie); seven grandchildren, Terrill E. Stovall (wife Donna), Desiree Stovall, Tonee’ Holt Cobb (husband Brandon), Blake Stovall (wife Sydney), Kassandra Gerdes (husband Simon), Tyler G. Holt, and Christy Stovall Beaver (husband Tyler); and 14 greatgrandchildren. I loved these kids from their first breath until my last.
I started my relationship with my God, being baptized and confirmed at Covenant Presbyterian Church in 1952 (now gone like me). Since 1982 I have been a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder for worship, mission, property, and youth. I have served as an usher, greeter, Lector, led fall stewardship campaigns, went on 15 mission trips (13 with the youth). I have tried to be a good servant for my Lord, but I have received so much, much more than I could ever give.
A military funeral will be held Monday, February 10th at 1:00PM at Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC, with Reverend Troy Lesher-Thomas officiating. The family will receive visitors in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church Building Fund or Youth Fund.
