Deborah Levine Herman (nee Levine), of Shaker Heights, died on April 26 at age 83 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. She was born on December 4, 1940, in Cleveland, the daughter of Jack and Sarah Bluma (nee Mendelson) Levine.
Debby graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1958 and then trained to become a secretary. She was an extremely fast and accurate typist and had exceptional proofreading and editing skills. For several years, she worked for Ralph and Terry Kovel, popular authors of close to 100 books and guides about antiques.
She attended both Ohio University and Cuyahoga Community College earning three degrees with honors. She was President of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Bylaws Committee Chairman, Editor of the campus newspaper, President of the Journalism Club, just to name a few. She was the author of the Kvetch Book and Founder/President of Coffeeholics Anonymous. She became an entrepreneur and went on to own multiple business ventures over the years. She assisted the love of her life Larry Weingarten with his wine and cheese store, Cheese World. She was an avid reader, and loved playing games with her son, grandchildren, nephews, and niece, especially Rummikub. She was a long-time member of Fairmount Temple in Beachwood, and more recently a member of Congregation JFX in Beachwood, where she enjoyed attending both Mussar and Torah classes.Debby was an active member of the Shaker Heights community and spent countless hours volunteering for multiple charities. She ran for Shaker Heights City Council and served in leadership roles for several organizations throughout the years. She was a member of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland, a graduate of the Shaker Heights Citizens Police Academy, and a graduate of the inaugural Shaker Heights Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class of 2007. She remained an active CERT member until her death.
Debby was the proud and loving mother of her son, Seth (Renay) Herman of Woodland Hills, CA; the loving grandmother of three: Jason Herman of Venice, CA, Brandon Herman of Dallas, TX, and Dylan Herman of Woodland Hills, CA; the devoted Aunt of nephews, Randy (Allison) Levine of Calabasas, CA, and David Louis Levine of Bellevue, WA, and niece Abbe (Merlin) Arias of Scottsdale, AZ, all three who she loved as if they were her own children.
She was predeceased by her fiancé Larry Weingarten Jr of Cleveland, OH, and brothers Ralph Levine (Joan) of Las Vegas, NV and Myron Levine of Shaker Heights, OH.
