George was student senate President our senior year, 1972. He will surely be missed at the upcoming 50th reunion.

George, how can it be a year already? It still feels every day that you’re going to walk through that door every single morning. You are missed so much every day. I am so grateful and blessed to have met you 30 years ago and becoming such a wonderful friend. There will never be anyone like you and I know we will meet again.  Hugs to Viv today and the kids. Miss you my dear friend.

Tracy and I want to extend our deepest sympathies for George’s passing. 

After the memorial service on Friday, Tracy said that she had always felt really heard by George. She said that whenever she spoke with him, he made her feel interesting and special. During the ceremony she realized that is how he made everyone feel and said what an amazing gift he had, to lift people up in that way. She wished that there were more Georges in the world, but realized that alas there was truly only one. 

Back when we played racquetball at CSU, as we walked to or from the courts, I was always astonished at how the faces of the people we encountered lit up when they saw him. It seemed like George knew everyone in the place and they were all genuinely happy to see him. It was a very sad day for me when his knees would no longer allow him to play, but I know that every cycling studio in town benefited greatly from that when he turned his full attention to that activity.

His was a life extraordinarily well lived. We feel honored that we got to share part of it and are profoundly sorry for your loss.

I did not know George very well.
But whenever I saw him it was like seeing an old friend. From the racquetball courts at Cleveland State to the
Cleveland Art Museum, seeing him brought a smile to my face and those around him. I have not stopped thinking about his passing since I heard. He is a special person and may his memory be a blessing to his family and all that knew him. 

Growing up in Scotia, Patty was my best friend.  I spent many happy times in the Gatta household.  I am so very sorry to hear of George's passing.   Please know that I'm sending my love & sympathy to all of the Gattas.

To the people who weren't fortunate enough to know George, it may seem absurd that a man nearly 30 years my senior could have been such an incredible friend to me. To those of us who knew George-- this was a given. 

His commitment to meaningful relationships regardless of your age, race or gender was an essential part of the profundity of George. These boundaries appeared inconsequential him. He was too busy getting to know you. He was tireless in his pursuit of kindness. He was exhausting his insistence that your existence matters. And he did it all with a smile and twinkle in his eye. There have been few (if any) people that have so casually waltzed into my life with such a balance of humor and candor, that made me feel as appreciated as he did in the small amount of time we knew each other.  

George's spirit was huge, it filled up every room he was in, yet he never demanded attention. People simply felt better when George was around. Maybe because he always seemed so happy just to be where he was. Today, I feel so fortunate to have been there. With George. To George-- I'm going to miss you dearly. To George's family-- thank you. Thank you for sharing the man that all of us were fortunate enough to know. 

George was a shining light whose spirit will live on. So many good memories for many of our instructors and our GrooveRyde community. The front row will never be the same, but we'll move forward knowing that George is always with us. He will be missed.

Dear Viv, All of us at Frost Valley are at a loss for words. We get so many compliments on our facilities and so many people who want to come here and see the buildings. Frost Valley is sort of George's Museum of Art. He was a special artist and a special friend. I loved how we could go for months without talking and then pick up where we left off. He always had a smile and a kind word. We almost never had a conversation where he didn't mention you. We once walked all over the Union Square area looking for a restaurant so he could buy you a cookbook. I still smile when I think about that day. He was a dear friend and we will miss him.

The first time I met George at a yoga class, I was struck by his incredible warmth, easy-going nature,  generosity and his giant sense of humor! Whenever he was in class, I knew laughter would follow, and at the same time I could sense he cared deeply about others and somehow made time to engage with everyone no matter how busy he seemed.  His youthful energy was simply contagious and after leaving a conversation with him, I always felt uplifted, seen and heard.  

There are many who have the best of intentions, but it was George who recalled the details of our brief conversation and reached out with generous offers of help in a job search. I was very surprised he remembered and incredibly grateful. He had no idea how much that gesture meant to me, but it stuck. 

I would say life can be unfair, but I believe George would prefer a walk on the bright side, and so I'll happily honor him for that.  George told me he absolutely LOVED what he did as an architect, but I believe  his architect's abilities went beyond buildings to  a beautiful life where he created joy no matter where he found himself.  It's in this way I will remember him. Simply full of life. 

George, you will be deeply missed. Sending love, peace and healing prayers to your family and friends. 

George was a very special person in my life.  We first met in the mid 1970's when he and his best friend Rick Parker worked part time as students with our firm Todd Schmidt and Associates.  George wore cloggs which set him apart during the strange 70's.  I knew from the start that he was uniquely talented.  He and Rick and their friend Steve created amazing architecture and master planning for a young untested firm.

George came back to us as schmidtcopelandparkerstevens after a 17 year partnership to work with me and Rick on children's camp projects throughout the United States. We spent thousands of hours together.  He had this amazing ability, to listen to a clients dreams and start to sketch those dreams on paper, right in front of their eyes.  

One of the great moments I remember, in 2008 we were hired by the University of Michigan to work with two local firms to develop a concept for a camp on property they owned.  We were working directly for the U of M Planning Director.   During the interview George got up and started drawing on a white board and drew  the footprints of the proposed building.  

He had an amazing talent.  Over my 50+ years no other architect could do what he did.

To Vivian and his children,  know that your father was a great man.  He loved the work we did with children and camps across the country.  We traveled thousands of miles together and spent thousands of hours together.  He silently touched thousands of children's and families lives with his wit, creativity, and passion.

I met george when he attended my spinning classes at Cleveland State back in 2013. I was a sub par, nervous teacher at the time but he never made me feel that way. From there, I ran into george and viv at the art museum and all over Cleveland heights - always leaving every interaction feeling better than before. I aspire to be as proud and dedicated to my family like George was. His legacy will live on, but I wish I could see him again. 

I am truly saddened to hear of George’s passing. I met George through tending bar at the Turf Tavern. I have probably talked to George 10 times, but from the first time I knew I was talking to a friend. He was kind, intelligent and very, very funny. George was the type of person that, as a bartender, if George showed up as you were locking up and he said, “do I have time for a quick one”, you would say, “get in here George” because you knew that laughter would soon follow. The video of him doing the “magic tricks” is so George. Those of us who knew him are better for it. His light will be sorely missed. 

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with George at DHPY on a number of special projects that we would often later joke about when our paths crossed for various reasons.  He was a thoughtful architect but more importantly a warm and genuine person.  I will miss catching up with him.  Our sincerest condolences to Vivian and the family.

We are broken-hearted to hear of the sudden passing of Tom's cousin, George Gatta. George was a spectacular person, always reaching out and sharing his love and laughter with family and friends. We were so honored to have George as our best man at our wedding. Condolences to Vivian and family, the extended Gatta Family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. George was one of the best teachers/mentors I have ever had. His genuine positive attitude and care for his students left a profound impact on us all; the class of 2020. Though I only had class with George my first semester in Interior Architecture at CIA, he was always someone I wanted to stop and talk to whenever he was around just because I knew that if I talked to George, it met he’d have something great to say. He has offered reassurance and comfort as a professional to me in an unprecedented time after graduation. And, he always had great advice whenever I needed it. I recently spoke with George on the phone shortly after graduation. He said, “keep your head up, you’re on the way to where you need to be.” I can still hear his voice. He will be missed by his students. For the classes that follow the rising Juniors, George’s legacy will he kept alive. He is always going to be a positive impact on my life. So with all that being said, thank you George. For the brief time I knew you I will be forever grateful.  

Words cannot express the sadness we feel upon hearing of George’s passing.  George was such a warm and wonderful friend and presence in our lives in his earlier years in Scotia.  His giggle and laugh were infectious and he always made everyone feel comfortable.  Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to Vivian and the kids, and all of George’s friends and coworkers, who, judging by all of the testimony, experienced George’s kindness and humor through the years as well.

Vivian's family and mine go back to when our fathers were kids. I remember when Vivian first met George back in the early 1980s. My mother LOVED George (and in second, third and fourth place were probably Vivian, Clyde and Maureen). 

She would say to me (not just once, but often over like 10 years) "I don't care who you marry, just bring home someone like George Gatta."

Gatta family - We are devastated by this loss. George became a part of Camp Ramah in the Poconos (PA) and even learned a little Hebrew along the way. We loved him from our first meeting, as he understood what summer camp meant to so many and helped us envision the future of our campus. We send our love to you all and share your broken hearts. 

george did not know a stranger, and he was so special to so many people. i was lucky enough to ride next to george at harness more often than not, and if we’re weren’t in the same class we rode on the same bike (#3 at hingetown and #8 downtown). i never left that room without a sweaty high five from george. he was a part of so many special moments — milestone rides, my engagement party, holiday gatherings, coffee after class — he’s the only person i could see on the westside in the morning (likely doing a double), and then again on the eastside at starbucks or a yoga class in the afternoon. it’s like he had more hours in the day than the rest of us. his presence rippled throughout the community. he was everyone’s #1 fan, our common denominator, the thread that wove us all together, our constant support. he made everyone feel like they were his favorite. he lived, he gave, and he loved. his spirit is alive in so many of us, and i will live each day asking “what would george do?” sending you all love, strength, and peace as you recall memories and celebrate a life lived fully.

Vivian.  I am so sorry for you and your family’s loss.  I have so many fun memories with George, and serious but still fun ones on work projects.  But what I really remember about George is his energy.   It is an energy that will live on in all of us who he touched. 

George was the kindest, sweetest, funniest, most empathetic person I have ever met. I had the honor of working with him every single day. He simply brought joy to a stressful world and made my day every single day he walked through the door. He loved to show me on his phone his family pictures, events, videos of anything they did that day. I nagged him to print those out and put them on his desk! I remember one day he said he went to Starbucks down the street. He saw a long line in front of Malley's chocolates. He stood in line. Didn't know why. He asked someone what it was for. Chocolate covered strawberries. He stood in line. George could make a friend in a second. I will miss him every single day and what an emotional support he was for me during difficult times. Vivian, you simply had the best. As short as it was on this earth, he simply adored you and his kids. He showed that every single day. My heart goes out to you all. I will miss George every single day, and know that I was so blessed to have known him. 


George coached our son Paul in soccer and baseball over a range of ages.  We remember the joy with which he coached and how he conveyed that joy to both kids and parents.  George was a kind, thoughtful man, a wonderful husband and father and he and Vivian have been our cherished friends for nearly three decades.  Our children adore him.  The world is a lonelier place without him.  We will miss him but the memory of his laughter will sustain us in the years ahead.

I was heartbroken to hear about the passing of George. One of the best memories I have of him was working Heights Lacrosse camp. He was always incredibly genuine and showed so much interest in me as a person. His contagious personality and desire to help others was so visible and kept me coming back every year. I will never forget the positive impact he had on me and so many others.

George was a architect I met in his office trying to get involved with his projects for lighting.  What happened was we became friends.  He certainly loved to laugh.  He became a good customer but a better friend.  We shared Indians tickets thru the great run of the Tribe from 1994-2000. He loved the Indians. George you will be missed.

My favorite memory of George is from at least 15 years ago when I was on a work trip with him and Rick Parker. The 3 of us were driving to a camp project, and it was the first time I had spent time with George and Rick together. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life! I had nothing to do with the stories they were telling, but George’s laugh was so infectious I was rolling over in the back seat. I will always remember him that way: laughing and smiling.

What amazing mentor and an inspiring soul George was. As a young architectural intern, I knew I could always count on him for an encouraging word or some valuable insight on a project (or help with a Sudoku puzzle during our lunch breaks!) He will be dearly missed by so many!

From our initial sleepover in first grade to our latest catch up a few weeks ago, George ‘s friendship is timeless.  A fellow who lived a full life, adored Vivian , loved  his family and forever will be thought of as a good man .

Oh, what can I say about George? A man I knew from the inside of a spin studio. I worked at Harness Cycle from Feb 2017-Sept 2018. During that time he was one of my favorite faces to see coming through the door. On Friday evenings he would arrive early for his class. He would chat with me and my dear friend/former manager Matt. He gave me career advice, made me laugh, encouraged me, rode beside me, and was so loved by everyone. He was really loved by me. I loved George.

I am sending all of my love and condolences to George’s family. I got the chance to meet them a few times. He loved them profoundly. I knew all about his wife and children. He also truly loved his work. His zest for life was amazing.

Life is short, grief is long, but just know that George was such a terrific man. He left a lasting impact on me. What a cheerleader. What a friend. May he Rest In Peace. 

My thoughts and prayers to the Gatta family during this time. I worked with George at C. C. Hodgson's several years ago at the very beginning of my career. He had incredible talent as a designer and his hand renderings were simply amazing. He was always smiling and joking and could take it just as well as he could deal it out. Four of us spent a legendary Saturday, we called "guycathelon" where we competed in 10  sports, ending with a memorable poker night. I am so sorry to hear of George’s passing. He was such a delight to work with on every camp and retreat project. He was a creative designer because he listened carefully to our clients and really cared that what he produced reflected their vision. George was my Harness Cycle friend, but he became a Learning Partner at one of the schools I oversee these last two years. He was joyful and judgment-free. He rooted for everyone he met and his laugh and smile filled every space he entered. For the last four months he joined daily or weekly Morning Meeting Zoom calls with the class he was partnered with before we were forced out of school because of Covid. He messaged to thank me for getting him involved in our schools. He said he was scheduling his business meetings around Morning Meeting, so he wouldn’t miss connecting with the students. I was just now drafting what to say to our 8 and 9 year old students this week during their meeting, and I wrote about how sometimes bodies stop but that people live on. Nothing is truer about George. He will live on in all of us. The gratitude for having him in our lives and for having known his friendship will live on in each of us who knew him. All my love to his family.
