Born February 19, 1931, Joan was raised in Shaker Heights by a loving family where she wanted for nothing. She grew up with a great appreciation for what she had in life. She was thankful every day for her parents, her family, her friends (both life-long and newly-met), and her helpers and caregivers. She was a gentle-woman always. Manners and etiquette were just a part of her nature, and she set the standard for her family.
Joan was a smart, accomplished and involved woman. She attended Mills College and graduated from Flora Stone Mather. She was an active member of the Mount Sinai Hospital Women’s auxiliary, The Temple Women’s Association, Mercer school PTA, Laurel School Parents’ Association, and Oakwood Club Women’s Golf Association. She was also a Girl Scout troop leader and the first aider assigned to accompany Arnold Palmer when he won the inaugural $100,000 Cleveland Open in1963.
Joan was thoroughly involved in the lives of her three daughters and all their academic & extracurricular pursuits. She never missed attending a concert or competition! She was equally proud of their adult professional pursuits. She enjoyed needlework, golf, traveling, her weekly Mahjong game, solving puzzles, Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians and winters in Florida. She loved to throw parties and entertain her friends. She was kind, generous, loyal, thoughtful, and incredibly organized. She treasured her friends and loved all animals, especially her cats, dogs and her daughters’ horses.
She lived the last six years with her daughters. We all treasured this bonus time together. Her death marks the end of an era for the entire Eigner/Freedman family.
She is predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Leonard Mark Eigner, and by her parents, Max and Ruth Freedman, her brother Daniel Freedman (Bobbie), and her in-laws Maureen Eigner White (Bernard), Dr. Edwin (Sibyl) Eigner, and Stanley (Geri) Eigner.
She leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her daughters Jody Eigner Turano, Laurie Eigner Aronoff (Steve), and Dr. Susan Eigner Regal (Brett); and grandchildren Allison, Kimberly, Jeremy, Caroline, David and Sara and two great grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
