

He was the beloved husband of Toby (nee Rotberg); loving father of Marissa (Daniel Sartori) and Zachary (Anne Rosenblatt); cherished son of Bayle and Gerald Schaffer; dear brother of Jean (Dan) Ory and Cynthia (Jeff) Minkovitz; and dear brother-in-law of Sherry (Michael, of blessed memory) Goren. He was predeceased by his in-laws, Fay and Jack Rotberg (of blessed memory). He was an adored grandfather (Gogo) to Miriam, Jacob, Henry and Audrey; and Uncle/Cousin Gogi to many.
Jonathan grew up in Cleveland, graduating from Shaker Heights High School in 1976. He attended Haverford College close to his maternal grandparents Sylvia and Meyer Rubenstein, returning to Cleveland for medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. After medical school, he and Toby married in Toronto and moved to Philadelphia for his Orthopedic Surgery residency at University of Pennsylvania. He then spent 12 years in Boston at Brigham and Women’s Hospital during which time he also completed the NIH Orthopedic Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and earned his MBA from Northwestern University. In 2000, he returned with his family to his hometown of Cleveland as a joint replacement surgeon and Managing Director, Information Technology at the Cleveland Clinic.
Jonathan grew up with a love of aviation and became a certified pilot in high school, flying a plane to Toronto for his first date with Toby. He supported his local fire and police forces wherever he lived and served as a volunteer firefighter for many years. He taught his children and grandchildren to have a strong work ethic, the importance of contributing to the community and the value of a good prank.
A family graveside funeral will be held at Mt. Olive Cemetery on Friday, March 27.
Shiva will be held from 2 to 5 pm at the residence.
Contributions can be made to the Taussig Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic in his memory.
