Marcia “Marcy” Schindler (née Goldstein), age 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, April 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving caregiver, Theresa Smith, and the beautiful artwork that defined her later years. Born in Akron, Ohio in 1937 to Rose Mizel Goldstein and Ben Goldstein, Marcy carried a youthful sense of wonder and deep appreciation for beauty throughout her life.
She attended Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University where she studied art education. Marcy married Oswald "Ozzie" Schindler in 1956, beginning a loving partnership that would span nearly five decades. Together they built a life filled with laughter, travel, and family.
Marcy supported Ozzie in his international trade business, often traveling with him on trips that mixed business with pleasure while visiting relatives throughout Europe. She demonstrated her versatility by obtaining her realtor's license in the 1970s, where her natural eye for property and genuine way with people made her a success in the Heights area where she and Ozzie made their home.
An active volunteer with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, Marcy helped international medical doctors acclimate to life in Cleveland during their internships, residencies, and fellowships. Her warm personality and genuine concern for others made her perfectly suited for this role.
After Ozzie became ill in the late 1990s, Marcy dedicated herself entirely to his care until his passing in 2002. Following this loss, she rekindled her love of art, immersing herself in pastel painting at the Orange Art Center. Over the years, until spinal issues made it difficult to sit for extended periods of time, she was a prolific artist, creating each work in a single three-hour session where she entered a focused, almost trance-like state. She never sought to sell her work, creating solely for the joy of artistic expression.
Marcy was also a passionate supporter of the Cleveland Orchestra, classical music, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Despite health challenges in her final decade, she maintained a cheerful, upbeat attitude that inspired all who knew her. During these years, she formed wonderful relationships with her caregivers, particularly with Theresa Smith, with whom she shared a unique and special bond. Marcy’s kind, generous spirit and dedication to creating happiness around her touched countless lives.
She is survived by her three children, Mark (Angela Shen-Hsieh) Schindler, Jill Frumer, and Paul (Marnie) Schindler; six grandchildren, Alexa (Andrew) Bruno, Daniel Schindler, Lindsay Frumer, Zachary "Milo" Schindler, Mallory Schindler, and Nicole Schindler; great-granddaughter Madison “Maddie” Bruno; as well as three nephews, numerous cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her dear sister, Joan Miller.
