Marvin “Marv” Schwartz, a devoted husband and father, passed away on January 25 at the age of 80. He was a brilliant, gentle, and deeply kind man whose curiosity and integrity shaped everyone around him.
Marv was known for his quiet intellect, thoughtful presence, and unwavering belief that anything worth doing was worth doing well. He didn’t seek attention, but his expertise — particularly in computing — often placed him there anyway. He was ahead of his time in ways many never noticed, carrying that brilliance with humility, kindness, and care.
Learning and problem-solving brought Marv genuine joy. Whether writing elegant lines of code, perfecting a recipe, mastering a new pursuit, or diving deeply into a subject that caught his interest, he approached life with curiosity and dedication. For him, figuring things out — and getting them right — was both stimulating and fun.
A proud alumnus of the Case Institute of Technology, Marv earned his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1972 and later served as past president of the Case Western Reserve University Alumni Association. His connection to the university remained an important part of his life and identity.
Marv was also an avid private pilot who loved flying, a passion that reflected his precision, curiosity, and sense of wonder. At home, he was an exceptional cook and baker, expressing care and creativity through elaborate meals and carefully crafted recipes.
He shared his love of discovery generously with his family. Long before computers were common, they were part of daily life in his home. He encouraged curiosity, independent thinking, and learning by doing, inviting his children into his interests while always supporting their own. He found special joy in bowling with his daughter Jackie, approaching the game with the same enthusiasm for study, technique, and improvement that he brought to everything he did.
As his son, Brad, began his career, their relationship evolved into one of thoughtful conversation and mutual respect. Marv became a trusted sounding board — never judgmental, always insightful — offering perspective that was honest, encouraging, and kind.
Above all, Marv was a gentle presence in the lives of those who knew him. He believed people were good until proven otherwise and lived with integrity every day, showing love through steadiness, patience, and quiet generosity.
Marv is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Schwartz; his daughter, Jackie Schwartz; his son, Brad Schwartz (Heather); and his cherished granddaughter, Minka Schwartz. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley Schwartz (Sandy); his sister, Nancy Schwartz; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He shared a particularly close bond with his in-laws. He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Schwartz.
His legacy lives on in the curiosity he inspired, the values he modeled, and the love he gave so quietly and consistently. He will be deeply missed.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 30th at 10:30 a.m. at Congregation Mishkan Or, 26000 Shaker Blvd., Beachwood. Interment will follow at Mayfield Cemetery, 2749 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights. Shiva will be observed from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Congregation Mishkan Or.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marvin’s memory may be made to the Case Western Reserve University School of Engineering, Welcome House, Inc., or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were made under the supervision of Berkowitz Kumin Bookatz Memorial Chapel.
