Dear Adrienne, Marla, Brian and Kevin,

My most sincere condolences on the passing of Mel.  He was a good friend of my parents and real mensch.  As great as his loss is, the light he brought to the world will continue to reflect in those who knew him.  May his memory forever be for a blessing.

I always enjoyed talking to Mel and visiting with him. During his time at Schechter, it was my pleasure to have continued interactions with him. I loved traveling with him to Detroit and to Washington DC with the older kids. Wry humor, fun to be with, Cared about the kids. Lovely man. My condolences and best wishes to his family.

I am honored to have been a friend and fraternity brother of Mel Wasserman for over sixty years . I can say without any doubt that Mel is one of the most genuine and kindest individuals  I have had the privilege of knowing. I always kidded  Mel that no matter where he and I would go, someone would come up to him and say  hi. Many were former colleagues, student parents and ultimately former students. I could see for myself how all of them had the utmost respect and fondness for Mel. I will miss you so much, my friend, but you will always be in my thoughts and I will cherish the memories that we shared.

I am saddened to hear this sad news. I was lucky enough to be Mel’s fraternity brother at CWRU.  He was kind, warm and always supportive.  What he gave to society as an educator and mentor I am sure was a positive influence on the lives he touched.  I was lucky enough to have seen him in Florida at a small gathering of Phi Sig brothers a few years back.

When I met and pledged Phi Sigma Delta as a Cleveland towny with Mel in January 1961, I realized what a special unique person he was.
His sincere, straightforward, and intelligent manner was evident; he had several talents:among them sports, music, and great organization skills. He was a leader and performed these with  great modesty.
     Mostly, Mel displayed exceptional courage in the face of his medical condition, with your loving assistance. Please accept my deepest condolences to you and the family. We will miss him and hope that his memory will be for a blessing.   Larry Rosenberg

When I pledged Phi Sigma Delta Fraternity in the fall of 1961, it was apparent to the members of the fraternity that I had problems with authority. I was later told that there was so much concern that I would not respond well to harassment that I was given one of the most respected fraternity members as a Big Brother: Mel Wasserman. Several times I erupted when fraternity members harassed or disrespected us pledges and Mel was called upon to protect me from being blackballed. Mel combined a good mind with honesty, maturity, concern for others, modesty, and excellent judgment. Those characteristics protected me and enabled me to get through the pledge period and become a frater, with many lifelong friends in the fraternity, including my great friend of almost 65 years, Mel Wasserman.

May his memory be a blessing to all those family members and students that had the good fortune to interact with such a mensch!  Rest in peace Mel, you can now watch over your family. Paul Gold
