Dr. Merton Harvey Lynn, a beloved individual known for his unwavering generosity, exceptional career and passion for life, has peacefully passed away Jan. 8, 2024, at the age of 89. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1934, he came to Cleveland in 1959 as a student at the Ohio School for Podiatric Medicine. There, he began an illustrious career as a pioneering podiatrist and continued to serve the community until he was 87 years old.
It was there he met his late wife, Gail, with whom he was dedicated and devoted to for 56 beautiful years until her death in 2017. Together, they raised three sons – Marc, Jeffrey and
Andrew – and Merton found joy in his daughter-in-laws, Lori and Jennifer. His legacy lives on through his adored grandchildren: Jacob, Ashley, Jessica, Samantha and Oliver, who were the light of his later years. Merton’s enthusiasm for life extended beyond his immediate family, fostering close bonds with his five siblings and a great deal of affection for his 21 nieces and nephews. Equally as important were deep friendships, some of whom he has known since his early days as a camper at Camp Airy, in the mountains of Maryland.
Merton had a profound appreciation for the arts and was an avid patron of the Cleveland Museum of Art. As a long time season ticket holder to Severance Hall, his passion for Classical music also included yearly visits to the piano competitions through the Cleveland Institute of Music. He loved sharing his love for music with his family and would often be seen with a grandchild at a Broadway musical, recital or sporting event.
He loved sports, both as participant and spectator. He was a walking enthusiast and in his earlier years, played tennis and basketball competitively. He was a rabid Redskins fan and then in his adopted hometown Cleveland, followed the Cavs, Browns and Guardians religiously.
He was deeply entrenched in the Jewish Community, a long time member of Park Synagogue, he enjoyed ushering for years during the High Holidays and Shabbat services.
In honoring Dr. Merton Lynn’s memory, his family requests that donations be made to The American Heart Association or The Cleveland Institute of Music in lieu of flowers, symbolizing his enduring spirit of generosity and compassion towards others. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to have been part of his remarkable journey.
