Nadene was born 65 years ago to two loving parents in Brooklyn, NY. She married her high school sweetheart, Alan 46 years ago at the age of 19 and matured into a force of nature. Whether being mama bear to her cubs, or just plain “Mom” to her childrens’ friends, she brought out the best in people. Job 1 was raising the couple’s 2 children. Volunteering from “room mom” transitioning to Girl Scout leader and popcorn mom for the boy scouts and finally “band mom”, she treated every child as though they were her own. All this was done despite many absences by her husband whose business trips kept him away from home for long periods of time. She ran the house so well that he was often chastised upon his return home for “messing with the system”. Her compassion and easy interaction with adults made her a natural as a volunteer for Forbes House, the womens’ shelter in Lake County. She also served for a year as a board member for Temple Am Shalom.
Nadene’s favorite time of year was Thanksgiving, where she decorated the house and prepared dinner using recipes passed down through generations. The favorite being pumpkin torte, which enshrined many stories in family memories. She loved animals and nature, especially her 2 grandpuppies Bradley and Freddie. Rain, shine or snow, one of her favorite daily activities was feeding her squirrels.
This, despite chronic illnesses that stretch back many years. She faced all these challenges with dignity and a bravery that looked at each instance as “a bump in the road”. The problems became more acute July, 2019, when a life threatening disease took her mobility. Advised to “get her affairs in order” a month later made the family feel the ensuing 3 years with her was a gift, for which they will always be grateful.
She is survived by her loving husband (Alan), cherished children Tyler and Ashley (fiancée Dan George IV) and brother Laurence as well as many cousins. Ilene Durkin and Wendy Woda were her favorites. Her BFF Kathy Schmidt was closer than a sister and amazing support throughout.
Preceding her in death are parents Gerald and Mildred Alpert.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider organ donation. As a kidney transplant recipient (thank you forever, Matt McKeon) the following bumper sticker was most insightful: “Don’t take your organs to heaven, Lord knows we need them here”. Private services will be held Friday November 18, 2022 at the Mentor Municipal Cemetery.
