Sandra Cohen, age 82, passed away peacefully at home in the company of her devoted husband of 61 years, Stephen, on December 12, 2025. In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by her children, Jill (Daniel) Niewoehner, Alissa Cohen, and Marc (Melissa) Cohen. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren she adored: Madeleine, Eliza, and Benjamin Niewoehner, Alex and Jonas Cohen, and Sadie and Evan Cohen.
Sandy’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was fiercely proud of her children and grandchildren, and eager to share their accomplishments. She was a devoted and generous wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and always willing to help. Though poor health left her bedbound for the last two years, she remained optimistic, brave and cheerful.
Sandy was born on December 19, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sandy married Steve and moved to the West side of Cleveland in 1964. There she served as a dedicated and caring history and government teacher for many years, first at Berea High School and then for more than thirty years at Polaris Career Center, where she had a profound impact on the academic and personal lives of countless students, many of whom remembered her fondly many years later.
Sandy had a passion for cooking and was known to friends and family as a phenomenal cook. She taught Chinese and traditional Jewish cooking classes in the evenings and catered her children’s bar and bat mitzvah parties herself to rave reviews. She loved Thanksgiving and couldn’t wait for all her children to return with their families to their childhood home to spend Thanksgiving together each year. It is with tremendous gratitude that the entire family was able to spend our last Thanksgiving together this year.
Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Leah and Max Krisch, and her sister, Marcia Mull.
