A native of Cleveland, Sindell was born on May 4th 1942. He graduated from Cleveland Heights High and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in the City of New York graduating in 1964. During that time period, he also studied abroad in France at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Bordeaux and at the famed Sorbonne Université. He continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law where he earned his J.D.
Sindell’s legal career began in California and continued in Ohio as a litigator with principal interest in civil rights and constitutional law. This passion led him to represent 12 of the 13 victims of the Kent State shooting in state and federal litigation throughout the 1970s. This culminated in his unanimous 8-0 victory before the US Supreme Court at the age of 31 years old. This established the right to sue public officials for violations of civil rights.
Throughout the span of his 50-year career, he was committed to social justice and equitable access to legal representation for all. He was a partner at Sindell and Sindell with his father, and later with Sindell Lowe Guidubaldi & Sucher.
After meeting his beloved wife Rachel, they went into practice together as Sindell & Sindell LLP - carrying with them Stevens guiding principles in defense of medical, nursing, and pharmaceutical licenses. Their practice touched the lives of countless healthcare providers. After Rachel’s untimely passing in March of this year at the age of 67, Steven’s dedication to his clients never wavered even into his final days.
Beyond his professional achievements, Steven was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his four children Jessica, Daniel, David and Deborah. His sisters Carol and Linda. His three grandchildren Noah Benjamin and Adam by David’s wife Hiroko. His son in law Peter, husband of Jessica. And daughter in law Eliana, wife of Daniel. And of course, by his beloved pet chihuahua Roxie. We will all miss him dearly.
A memorial service in celebration of Steven’s incredible life will be held at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S Taylor Rd, Cleveland Hts, OH 44118 on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 10:30 am.
