Daniel Sidewand, Mentor Police Department, Retired, Badge Number 25
Daniel K. Sidewand, 70, of Painesville, passed away from complications of pancreatic cancer at Malachi House on March 17, 2022.
Born September 13, 1951, he was a resident of Lake County nearly all of his life. He graduated from Mentor High School in 1969 and studied Criminal Justice Administration at Kent State University. After that, he attended the police academy at Case Western Reserve University, graduating from the Basic Police School on December 10, 1976. His greatest achievements and proudest moments were when he was a police officer with the Mentor Police Department, where for a time he and his father were one of only two father-son duos on the force. Before he retired from the police force in 1988, he received numerous commendations, including one for heroism.
He was a man of tremendous musical talent; in addition to the guitar, he played bass, piano, and drums, and he sang. Like many members of his generation, he was an avid fan of the Beatles and could play any of their songs. Music brought him comfort and joy throughout his life, and his extensive collection of vinyl albums includes many of the greats from the 1960s and 1970s.
Dan married Victoria Jane Steger in 1973 and had two sons, James F. and David K. Sidewand (Jennifer). The couple divorced in 1978. He was granddad to two, Noah and Owen.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Harry H. and Norma (nee Johnson) Sidewand; and sister Bonnie L. (nee Sidewand) Chivas. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Dan leaves behind many friends, most notably Jan and Amanda.
To honor his memory, donations can be made in his name to Malachi House of Cleveland.
