Percy D Mitchell

30 septiembre , 19628 septiembre , 2021

Percy David Mitchell affectionately called Candy since childhood by his family, was born to Yvonne Pickett Mitchell and David R. Mitchell on September 30, 1962, in Cleveland, Ohio. Candy grew up in a very loving, God-fearing, bible teaching family that cherished their time spent together. As a child he would eagerly call upon cousins for rides to weeknight church services. Percy was educated in the Cleveland Public School System and graduated from East Technical Senior High School then went on to later obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree. As a man of varied interests, Percy not only played semi-pro football, but he also held a position with the County Sheriff ’s Department. His desire to help people led him to become a Patient Service Rep in the Social Service Department at the Centers for Dialysis Care for nineteen years before his illness finally caused him to slow down. Always full of life, there would surely be a loud voice, much laughter, fun and long, tall-tales whenever Percy was in attendance. He was an avid sports fan and was THEE best pool shark in all the free world, self-proclaimed, of course. He even named his pool sticks and always kept one in the trunk of his car. Never far from Percy’s side was his one and only brother, Charles “Charlie” Taylor. He faithfully, patiently, and lovingly cared for him, taught him, and played with him from the time he was born. Always putting Charlie before himself and forever watching over him. Introduced to Jesus Christ at an early age, Percy was first a member of the House of God Church under the tutelage of his aunt, Pastor Mae C. Hodge. He loved the Lord with all his heart and followed his friend and co-worker, Justine Gates-Lockwood, when she founded and pastored Messiah Ministries Church of God in Christ in 2002. With her encouragement and leadership, Percy led bible studies, taught the youth in Sunday School, was president of the Usher Board and anointed Deacon Percy Mitchell. He enjoyed praying and had a heart for giving, God’s people, and children. Percy was preceded in death by his parents, Yvonne and David Mitchell. Left to cherish his memory and mourn his absence is his younger brother, Charles Taylor, his pastor – Justine Lockwood, his Messiah Ministries church family and Sister Candace Mason, best friend Lynell Pointer and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a scholar and a gentleman. A father to many though he had no children . We reconnected after many years and had begun to make plans for a shared future. But the sand was slipping from our hands. His is not a cautionary tale but a story of living and giving for a God. Rest easy king your job is done.
