Cherubina (“Ena”) Maria DeMarco (Thow) was born in Birmingham England on September 22, 1937, to Flora (Garbati) and Archibald Thow. Her family moved to Stenhousemuir, Scotland in 1939 where she and her brother Charlie were raised. She emigrated to Montreal, Canada at the age of 17 in search of employment and shortly thereafter to the U.S. to live with her Aunt Josephine and husband Robert Moffat in Yonkers, NY. It was while working at the Mt. Vernon Hospital that she met the love of her life Dr. Carmine Nicholas DeMarco.
After a whirlwind courtship they were married in 1960 and had their 3 children Carl, Gregory, and Adriene in under 3 years while living in Mt. Vernon, NY. They soon moved to nearby Bronxville where the kids were raised and nurtured. They purchased a summer cottage near the beach in Westbrook, CT at the same time. Between Bronxville and Westbrook, they built a rich and joyous life filled with lifelong friendships and meaningful experiences. They were married for 55 years before Nick’s passing in 2015.
Ena possessed a Scottish brogue, mega-watt smile, infectious warmth, sense of humor, and zest for life that drew people to her. She craved human connection, left joy in her wake and was loved by many even those she encountered in her final years in assisted living homes in TX and NH. She loved family, friends, dancing, music (opera, Elvis), tennis, golf, the beach, travel, cooking, and family and social gatherings. Her memory and spirit will live on in those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her son Carl and wife Lori DeMarco of Stamford, CT, her son Gregory and wife Susan DeMarco of Tuftonboro, NH, and her daughter Adriene and husband Donnie Dick of Needham, MA; her grandchildren Alexander, Craig, Nicholas, Sophia, Wesley, Brooke, Izabelle and Gehrig; her brother Charles of Tasmania, Australia, and her nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Clinton, CT on Saturday, May 3rd at 1:30pm followed by a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in memory of mom to any charity close to your heart.
