Elinor was born in Reading, Pa. to Florence Symons and Chester Kintzer. She was a graduate of Middlesex Hospital School of Nursing in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Elinor was the youngest of 3 sisters and was predeceased by her parents and sisters Kathryn Finger and Frances Krammes.
Elinor is survived by her 3 children Linda Cokas, Derek Meyer and Duane Meyer. She was also privileged to have had 8 grandchildren NiCole & Christiaan Cokas, Brianna, Alex & Mackenzie Meyer and Justin, Travis & Kaitlyn Meyer! Elinor was most privileged to be the great grandmother of 18!
Elinor was affectionately known as “Pinky” because, as your pinky is the smallest finger on your hand; she was the smallest student in her nursing school! Many of her fellow students stayed lifelong friends, including Mary Shaughnessy and Ollie Swanell.
In addition to nursing, Pinky enjoyed music through singing in the church choir, playing the piano and even taking lessons on the kettle drums! Her hobbies also included crossword puzzles and playing Bridge.
Pinky was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, CT for more than 40 years. Besides regular attendance, she participated in her grandchildren’s weddings and great grandchildren’s baptisms at AHCC. She also was part of the annual Boar’s Head celebration at the church. Her prized role was carrying a honking goose in the Boar’s Head procession, through the sanctuary, to the delight of her and everyone in the audience!
Our mom loved the (New) Jersey shore. She first experienced the “shore” as a child with her parents. They would drive from Reading PA to New Jersey and find a motel, without making a reservation ahead of time, which she thought was one of the charms of vacationing at the shore!
Our family spent 2 weeks each summer at a cottage in Seaside Park, NJ. During one of those visits, we had to do laundry. While taking socks out of the dryer, that were still a little damp, mom exclaimed “those damn socks!”. First time we had ever heard her swear and to this day, whenever socks go into the dryer, we fondly remember her exasperation!
Of course, Jersey Boys was her favorite Broadway play! Her gift, for her 90th birthday party, was tickets to see the show, just “one more time.”
For all these reasons and many more, mom has been memorialized with an engraved board on the Seaside Heights boardwalk. It reads,
“Elinor “Pinky” Meyer Loved the Jersey Shore”
She will always be a part of the Jersey shore, which she first fell in love with as a child.
Our family would like to thank Jenny at Solstice who got us through COVID plus much more and the staff at Ocean Meadow and Gladeview, who all helped take care of mom through the last years of her life.
To honor our mother, A Celebration of Life will be held at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave, Hartford, CT 06105 on Saturday, August 5th, 2023 from 11AM - 1PM. All are welcome. Her ashes will be laid to rest in the memorial garden at the church.
