John P. “Jack” Ward, Sr. of Westbrook died peacefully on March 8th after a long illness. He was born on October 25, 1936 to the late Anna Hooley and William A Ward, Jr. in Middletown, CT. and lived most of his life in the shoreline area.
Jack graduated from Morgan High School in Clinton in 1954 and joined the Marines later that year. He attained the rank of sergeant, and he talked often of his travel and experiences during his service. Following the service, Jack attended Southern Connecticut State University, worked for National Cash Register in New York, served as an inspector for the state of Connecticut, operated the Glenwood Market in Clinton, worked for the Town of Clinton and spent the last 20 years of his career with the Swan Funeral Home.
Jack had a great appreciation for life and learning. He was deeply curious about nature, history, and the wonders that the world offered. One of his favorite experiences was climbing Mt. Whitney with his son. Jack had a passion for jazz music and the theater and was a voracious reader. More than anything he loved to laugh.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 37 years, Audrey Ward. They were high school sweethearts at Morgan. Also surviving him are his children, Maureen Ward of Seattle, John Ward, Jr. of Sacramento, and Katie Ward of Clinton, step-children, Brad Greene and his wife, Lisa, of Sandy Hook and Cindy Pitassi of North Kingstown; his siblings William Ward III of Clinton, Susan Altmannberger of Tennessee, David Ward and his wife, Mary, of Clinton, Karen Hathaway and her husband, Howie, of Clinton, and Agnes Ward of Indiana; nine grandchildren, Gabby, Josh, Vivian, Connor, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Lindsey, Vince & James, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to express its deep gratitude to Dr. Tracy Marquis and Nurse Barbara, Dr. Franklin and staff, Dr. Ridge and staff and the staff at Hospice of Middlesex Memorial Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care.
Calling hours will be held on Monday March 14th from 3-5pm with a memorial service immediately following at 5pm at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jack Ward can be made to the American Heart Association or the Wounded Warriors Project. To sign the online guest book visit www.swanfh.com
