

Jules John Canfield, age 79 of Westbrook, CT passed away on May 29. Jules was born at home in Perrysburg, Ohio on May 6, 1934 to the late Allen and Helen Canfield. He is survived by his loving wife Carole Canfield of Westbrook, CT; his son Mark Allen Canfield of Branford, CT; and his sister Jill Aspacher of Brooklyn, MI.
Jules was predeceased by his son Matthew Lee Canfield at the age of nine when he was killed by a car while riding his bicycle in Republic, OH; his sister Elaine Ruieley, deceased in the year 2001; and his brother Donald Clifton Canfield, deceased in the year 2010.
Jules started working for the Pennsylvania Railroad in May of 1951 in the signaling and communications department. He worked his way through the ranks to a management position with Conrail. He took early retirement in 1990. Soon after, he worked as a consulting Engineer in the Rail and Rail industry, both domestically and internationally in the fields of signaling, communications and Electrical. He worked on such projects as the Amtrak High Speed Acela Train upgrade service between Boston and New Haven. Jules also worked on the building of a new high speed passenger railroad in Taiwan, China. He was a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge #641 in Cincinnati, OH; a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati; and a member of the Shriner Syrian Shrine in Cincinnati, later transferring to the Sphinx Shrine in Newington, CT.
Jules and his wife Carole loved day sailing “Cerci” ,their 38’ C&C sailboat, cruising up the Maine Coast. They also enjoyed chartering sail boats in the Carribean and he enjoyed playing golf and many games of bridge.
There will be calling hours on Thursday, June 6 from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Swan Funeral Home, 80 East Main Street in Clinton. A memorial service will follow the calling hours at 4:00 pm.
