She is predeceased by her husband of fifty-six years, Harold L. Pope and her two brothers, James and William Somers.
She is survived by her five sons and their spouses, Harold (Carol), Jonathan (Carol), Steven (Mary), Matthew (Christina), Christopher (Shannon), two granddaughters, Stacey Pope and Katherine Sheikh (Nickolas) as well as three great grandchildren, Daisy, Norah and Alexander.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the New Haven State Teachers College in 1943 and taught in Hamden, CT before she and the love of her life (Harold), moved to Killingworth to raise their boys.
In addition to maintaining all things domestic, she was the bookkeeper for the family business where she was so accurate, that when audited, the IRS found a discrepancy of only three cents, (in her favor).
She was a perpetual den mother for countless Cub Scouts throughout the years and was a "second mother" to all of her children's many friends.
She loved boating on Long Island Sound and spent many of her summers visiting the islands and ports of New York. When she wasn't boating, bookkeeping, or bandaging skinned knees, she spent her time in the garden. Margaret was an avid gardener and her sprawling flower beds (which she maintained right up until her death), still flourish as a testament to her amazing abilities.
In addition to welcoming any kid who showed up at her door she also adopted any stray animal that showed up as well. Over the years she took in cats, dogs, birds, lizards, fish, turtles and squirrels, giving them all the best home, where they always got their dinners before her family got theirs.
Margaret was especially delighted when her "Girls" Willa, Katie, Mary and Karen (all from Roast Meat Hill Rd.) would stop by. Those visits meant more to her than they'll ever know and our whole family thanks them for that.
We are also grateful to all the people who worked so hard to help Margaret remain in her home in her later years, Companions and Homemakers, Home Aides, Visiting Nurses and Hospice Care. Thank you.
Margaret strived to never say anything bad about anybody and when someone complained to her about another individual she would always say, "Ok, now find something nice to say about them.".
In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you please, find something nice to say about somebody.
A service will be held at The Killingworth Congregational Church on Wednesday, August 18th at 10:00 am, all friends and family are invited to attend.
