James J. Shinneman, a dedicated Navy veteran, firefighter, and beloved family man, passed away at the age of 77 on April 27, 2024. James proudly served his country with two tours in Vietnam before transitioning to a remarkable career with the Detroit Fire Department, where he ultimately retired as a Captain after 33 years of service. Beyond his professional achievements, James was known for his passion for the outdoors. An avid fisherman and hunter, he cherished his annual hunting trips to a family friend's farm, a tradition spanning over 60 years.
He was a member of the Eagles Club, his local VA group, and the Rod and Gun Club, where he fostered lifelong friendships. James had a zest for life and a love for adventure. He enthusiastically participated in the Smoke on the Water fishing tournament and enjoyed reuniting with his old firefighter buddies. Family was paramount to James, and he created countless cherished memories on family vacations, including camping trips, visits to Disney, and his favorite destination, Yellowstone National Park. Above all else, James's greatest joy was his grandchildren, who were his world. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, as he leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and unwavering devotion. James was a true hero to many and will be deeply missed.
James was the loving husband of Denise for 54 years. The beloved father of Christopher, Kymberly (Derek Wroblewski) Shinneman, the late James and the late Michael. The cherish grandfather of Rachel, Brooklyn, Lily and Wyatt. The dear brother of the late Gerald (the late Betsy), the late Beverly (Robert) Hynes, Lawrence (the late Hazel) and Thomas (Regina). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation for James will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Resurrection Funeral Home, 40800 Hayes Road in Clinton Township. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Friends may visit on Saturday beginning at 10:00 am.
