

Jan passed away after a brief illness on May 28, 2016 at Caretel Inn of Bay City where she received loving, compassionate care. She was born July 20, 1938 to Julia (Kottnauer) and Fred Bossman in Saginaw, Michigan. Jan graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1956. She received a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Michigan State University. She began her teaching career at St. Clair Shores and transitioned to Fraser Public Schools in 1970, where she continued teaching until her retirement after more than 35 years of service. Jan blessed the lives of so many students over the years, many of whom have continued to stay in touch to the present day. A great number of her students credited her as their inspiration for pursuing their own careers in teaching.
On July 12, 1980 Jan married Charles Hooper, who preceded her in death on August 25, 2007.
Jan was involved in many volunteer organizations and enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She had a unique gift for making other feel special, genuinely expressing a sincere interest in their lives. From strangers to the closest of friends and family, she could always brighten their day with her lighthearted humor. Jan never missed an opportunity to make each child she met feel special. Spending time with family and her wide circle of friends was a priority in Jan’s life and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her sister Moody(Lowell) Butman of Frankenmuth, Michigan; son Aaron (Jennifer) Pettit of Carlsbad, California; nephews Stephen Butman of Astoria, New York and Michael Butman of Saginaw, Michigan; niece Laura (Kai) Nimtz of Holt, Michigan; great-nieces Allison, Rachel and Karen Nimtz; stepdaughters Linda (Fred) Brown and Susan Lutich, both of San Antonio, Texas; stepgrandchildren Nicholas Hooper, Ivy and Eve Lutich. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 3-8pm with a Scripture Service at 7pm at Kaul Funeral Home 35201 Garfield, Clinton Township. Funeral Mass Friday, June 3, 2016 at 10am with instate at 9:30 at St. Pio Catholic Church 18720 13 Mile, Roseville, Michigan.
