My sincere condolences to the Adams family. When you love someone so much and so deeply, losing them is beyond devastating. I remember Cookie so well as she was one of my very favorite persons.  Praying for your ☮️ & your comfort.

Grandma Cookie part 2/2

You were a  Pioneer for women’s representation. You graduated from high school at 16 and went to business school. It took me until now to fully appreciate the historical weight and impact of you having a female owned and run business  going as far back as the 1960’s. You were even in the newspaper decades ago showcasing this! I’d like to find a copy of that.

I have distant childhood memories of pretending to be a mannequin in the store front of Popkie Paint, of selling figurines to customers, and of eating Travis cheeseburgers during lunch.  

You prioritized your faith. You consistently attended church, prayed the rosary regularly, and even tuned in on tv when you could no longer travel. Your faith was fundamental to who you were as a person and it lives on eternally. 

What was clear surely to all is that you prioritized and valued time with family. Your choice in retirement was not a private retreat away from home, but a welcoming oasis. You opened your cabin doors to family and we came in droves. Your lake house in Oscoda was a fundamental pillar of my childhood memories. I know this to be true for many.

Sand dunes and sunsets, jet skis and trail rides, beaches and campfires;  your selfless choice in retirement was a gift to us all. Thank you.

Through these stories and memories a picture of a woman is painted. She exudes strength. She guides with respect and compassion. She models life through unconditional love. 

Part of the human experience thrives and is perpetuated through oral storytelling. Her stories have shaped me as a human, as a mother, as an independent woman, and as a Christian. Please know, dear grandma, that I will continue to share these stories. And so, your legacy lives on through the breath of each one.

91 years; how do you even begin to honor a legacy that is as rich and intricate, is as refined and authentic, that is both vast and personal? 

To do so adequately would require a network of perspectives; and yet I can only offer but one lens. And so grandma, here is my best effort to honor you, as I have known you, as I have loved you, and as I will remember you.

Much of what I know about the first half of your life is from stories told by you, in your voice, as you remembered them; and you told them often. 

You told me stories of growing up with your sister, Gloria, whom you loved dearly, whom also at times pushed your limits. These stories particularly resonate now, along the backdrop of raising my own two similarly aged daughters. 

You shared stories of growing up during the depression. One day a week, rather than reading or doing your arithmetic, you walked your neighborhood pulling a wagon behind, searching for scrap metal, rubber and anything for the war effort. 

You shared your story of falling in love with grandpa. How you would go dancing, how you thought of no one else. How your heart ached losing him after sharing 64 precious years together. I can only imagine the reunion you must be having now. 

You shared your story of giving birth on Christmas.  A baby you raised without her dad for two years as he was stationed over seas during the Korean War. You shared with me how special this baby was to you, and it seems fate intended that it be her hands and voice  that guided you on to the next world. 

You shared your heartache of never having the chance to get to know your own grandma, gone before your time. And, as a consequence, I believe, ensured your relationships with your own grandchildren wanted for not.

Lorraine has been a next door neighbor on the lake for many years. She was always very kind and friendly. We enjoyed all the great times with families! I am sure we will continue to enjoy seeing the family. She will be missed very much!!
