In loving memory of Merrilee Atwood, a woman whose boundless kindness and nurturing love touched the lives of all who knew her. Merrilee a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on January 30, 2024 at the age of 69.
Born on October 13, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan Merrilee exemplified the true essence of motherhood. Her love created a warm and inviting home that served as the heart of countless family memories. Merrilee was not only a source of comfort and support but also a beacon of kindness that extended to friends and neighbors.
Merrilee was a 1972 graduate of Carl Brablec High School in Roseville, Michigan. She retired from St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan after serving in various roles for over 40+ years. After her retirement, in a spirit of unwavering generosity, Merrilee dedicated her life to a myriad of philanthropic endeavors. Her compassionate heart and selfless spirit touched countless lives as she championed causes dear to her heart, shining as a ray of hope for those in need. Whether advocating for hydrocephalies, championing a local community member in need, or supporting various community fundraisers, Merrilee exemplified the true essence of giving back. Her legacy is not just one of benevolence, but a testament to the transformative power of compassion that resonates far beyond her time with us.
Merrilee's vibrant spirit was evident in her passion to travel and experience new places, as a true epicurean, she delighted in immersing herself in new culinary experiences, trying out the latest local spots and savoring the unique stories told by each restaurant she visited.
Merrilee, motivated by a desire to help others, contributed her body to The Gift of Life.
She is survived by her loving husband, David Atwood; children, Jason (Jennifer) Atwood and Carrie Atwood-Pressley; step-son, Chad (Alex) Atwood; grandchildren, Jacob Atwood and Brody Pressley; siblings, Kathy Macey and John VanHamme; and her fur baby, Louie. Merrilee was preceded in death by her mother, Eunice VanHamme (VanRosenberg); father, George VanHamme; and brother, James VanHamme.
