Sandra (Sandi) Joy was a caring wife, mother, Nona, Sister and Friend. She was born to Richard and Violet Heyer on July 17, 1952 in Detroit Michigan. Sandi was the middle child with older sister Vickie and younger sister Kimberly. The girls enjoyed taking Dad’s boat out for water skiing, swimming and parking the boat on Deadman's beach looking for boys. It was not uncommon to see the Heyer sisters and cousins pulling 10 waterskiers on Portage Lake in the 1960’s. In her high school days she hosted a few parties, and details from those parties to this day still remain hush hush.
After graduating from Fraser high school in 1970, Sandi pursued her dream and was the second female in the State to obtain a barber license. Her vocation suited her quite well as she went on to work in this field for many years not only providing quality hair services but building relationships and friendships along the way.
Sandi and Dale met in 1976 where she resided across the street from him on Bayside Drive in Saint Clair Shores, MI. It wasn't long before they were engaged to be married and began their life together in 1978, Married at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Roseville MI. They were married 43 years and raised three beautiful children together, Shawn, Shannon and Drew. They were then blessed with five grandchildren, Ella, Mya, Leah, Dominic and Jack whom she adored.
Over the years Sandi and Dale loved to spend time together at the Heyer family cottage, boating and being with friends and family. They enjoyed Michigan summers very much but also enjoyed Michigan Winters as well. Some of her favorite activities include paddle boarding and Kayaking or sitting on the beach with a good book. She especially loved watching her grandchildren enjoy the cottage like she did over the years.
Sandi had a knack for rescuing stray animals that needed a good home, they raised countless pets over the years. The animals just somehow found her, I suppose they could sense her caring soul. Sandi also loved home decorating and renovating properties, she and Dale would work together on projects and she found great joy in the finished product. She was pretty good at it too, home decorating was surely a gifted talent of hers, she had beautiful taste.
Sandi was very involved in her children's lives, she never missed a game and enjoyed every activity they were involved in. She served on the Board of the figure skating club, sewed countless dresses for competitions and drove the kids to and from the rink several times a day sometimes even before school started. She always seemed to make it all work despite the workload on her shoulders. She hosted many youth “camp” weekends at the Family cottage and enjoyed sharing her love for Jesus to the youth from the church and pretty much anyone she met, including strangers in line at the grocery store. She loved unconditionally.
Her friendships were important to her and one of her hobbies was book club. She developed a true love of reading and also enjoyed the social aspect of gathering with her girlfriends. She had many friends over the years that she kept in touch with and at times would spend countless hours on the phone catching up. She also adored her sisters Vickie, Kim and the Williams sisters Patty, Carol and Janice and her nieces and nephews were very special to her. Sandi led a very active and busy life, but her Faith was at the core of everything that she did.
Her heart was rooted in the Lord and it showed in every aspect of her life. One of the activities that brought her much joy was singing in the prayer and praise band at Cross. She led by example, always being actively involved at church and serving in the community. Her faith filled legacy will carry on in all of our hearts.
