Erna Maria Wallner Bailes was born in Straubing, Germany on November 14, 1930. She went to school during the time of Nazi occupied Germany. Erna was the youngest of six children. While window washing, Erna's father fell from a high-rise building leaving Erna's mother to raise the children alone.
During WWII Erna met a good-looking American soldier named Lionel Bailes. It was 1947. In 1950, Lionel sent for Erna. She came to live with her Uncle Aloise and Tante Lena until Lionel was granted a leave. Lionel and Erna were married in 1952. When Lionel was discharged from the Army, they moved from Louisiana to California. Lionel passed away in 1998.
In 2002 Erna met Verne Hongola; again, a handsome sailor pilot came into her life. They enjoyed each other's company until Verne passed away in 2011.
Erna was the greatest cook, seamstress, babysitter, housekeeper, wife, girlfriend, gardener and hostess.
Erna is survived by her daughter, Leta Bailes Ciavaglia, (Ron); son, David Bailes who was born on Erna's birthday. Erna always said he was the best gift she ever got! Her granddaughters, Nicole Ciavaglia Daly (Brendan) and Cristen Ciavaglia Martin. Erna was lucky enough to become the "Omie" to Aidan Daly, Logan Daly, Joshua Martin and Kiptyn Martin.
The family will announce a Celebration of Life at a later date.
