Pauline was the adopted daughter of Archie and Ida Morrill. She attended Dexter schools and spent her summer months during WWII working in the local USA Defense Department plant making airplane parts. She graduated from N. H. Fay High School in Dexter and went on to the Fisher Business College in Boston. After graduation, she returned to Dexter. She became secretary to the president of the local bank, later joining Hatch Insurance and Real Estate as their secretary. She married Clarence Hatfield who served in WWII and Korea. After his discharge, they settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She worked at Bridgeport Insurance, and it was there that her first child, Kenneth Hatfield, was born. In 1956, the family moved to California. In California, her second child, Fred Hatfield, and third child, Tana Hatfield, were born.
Pauline had a long career in the Fresno area, going to work in 1967 for Valley Medical Center’s Battered Children’s Syndrome Department and later transferring to the Fresno County Health Department’s Crippled Children’s Unit where she stayed for eight years. The Mental Health and Health Department merged during her time of work, and she also worked in the director’s office. She later became the receptionist for the Health Department, retiring from service in 1991.
Pauline enjoyed sports and was a devoted true fan to her teams. She was a huge supporter of California State University, Fresno, where a scholarship is awarded in her name annually. She loved her Bulldogs and went on many of their football and basketball road trips over the years. She bled “Dodger Blue,” rooting for her favorite professional baseball team without fail, and she was a faithful fan of the Los Angeles Rams. She also loved high school sports and regularly attended Friday night games with her family. Pauline was an avid reader and devoured books of all types. She attended New Hope Community Church and had many friends there. Her favorite season was fall with all the changing colors, and each year she looked forward to that time.
Pauline loved time with family and close friends. Gatherings when all were together were her favorite and most memorable. Whether it was a holiday or just a family barbeque, those moments were precious to her. She possessed a keen mind and a quick wit. She was always in when games like Yahtzee or Scrabble or Dominos were being played, and she had a competitive drive to win. Yet, it was her genuine kindness and care for others that made her so special. No one sent out more cards for more occasions than Pauline. In turn, she was an inspiration to her family and loved ones.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Kenneth and Frederick Littlefield. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Ken and Jeanne Hatfield of Clovis, her son Fred Hatfield of Washington D. C., her daughter and partner Tana Hatfield and Mark Carter of Fresno, grandson Geoff Hatfield of Washington D. C., granddaughter and grandson-in-law Kerri Hatfield and Brian Murphy of Mercer Island, WA, and great granddaughters Tatum and Sloane Murphy of Mercer Island, WA. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, dear friends, and her dog Lola.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks for the exceptional care given devotedly by staffs at both Sunrise Assisted Living and Saint Agnes Hospice. They would also like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Stewart Mason and Melissa Gamber of Central Valley Women’s Health Associates for their loving care over the years. We are grateful to all the family and close friends who were like “family” to Pauline over the years, those near and far, who sent love and cards, visited or prayed when they could, and often kept her sweet tooth happy.
