

Barbara Ann Hughes Benton, 79, died Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at her home in Angleton, Texas. Her service information is as follows: Visitation on Friday, June 25th from 5:00-7:00 PM and funeral on Saturday, June 26th at 11:00 AM. Both services will be at Restwood Memorial/Dignity Funeral Home in Lake Jackson, Texas.
Barbara was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 20, 1942. Soon after her family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where she grew up and lived until she married. In Nashville she attended Secretarial College. She became an Army military wife when she married Donald Everett Benton on October 2, 1965 and they began their life together. After his service, they moved to Freeport, Texas so he could begin a career with Dow Chemical Company. She was a stay at home Mom caring for her only child, Leigh Ann Benton Stark, until she began her career. Barbara began working for Brazosport College in 1974. She was the secretary to the Registrar, but then was promoted to Executive Secretary to the President. She worked in that position until she retired in 2001. In that position, she worked for three presidents over her 27 years of service to that institution. After retirement, she spent her time sewing, quilting, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sister, Elaine Hughes Duncan; her daughter, Leigh Ann Benton Stark (David L. Stark Jr.); her grandchildren, Bethany Stark (Kelton Walker) and Nathaniel Stark (Sydney Purdy); five great-grandchildren, Kelton Walker Jr., Thia Stark, Amora Purdy, Evelyn Stark, and Kataleya Walker; as well as other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Everett Hughes and Mildred Vester Hughes; her husband, Donald Everett Benton; and her brother, Douglas Everett Hughes Jr.
Flowers and plants are welcome because she loved them in life so much. She spent her last days enjoying the orchids that were blooming in her home.
