With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Bernita “Bonnie” Smith, also lovingly known as “Granny” and “Bernie,” who was born on December 1, 1934, in Church Point, LA and peacefully passed away on March 23, 2026.
Bonnie was a woman of strength, determination, and unconditional love. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother—truly the best mother anyone could ever imagine. Her life was centered around her family, and she gave of herself selflessly in every way.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray P. Smith; her daughter, Lovenia VanAuken; her son, Edward Smith; her parents, Eugene and Emily Olivier; and her brothers, Euman and Fred Olivier.
She is also remembered with love by her companion and partner, Richard Kisling.
She is survived by her children, Robert “Bobby” Smith and his wife Karen, Kaye Dusek and son-in-law, Richard VanAuken who will forever cherish her memory. She also leaves behind a legacy of love through her 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Bonnie had many talents and took great pride in caring for her family. She was a wonderful seamstress and an incredible cook, always making sure those around her felt comforted and cared for. She also enjoyed playing the slot machines and was quite good at it, something that brought her a lot of joy. One of her proudest accomplishments was returning to school to earn her GED the same year her daughter Lovenia graduated—a true testament to her determination and strength.
A celebration of her life will be held on April 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Restwood Funeral Home 1038 W. Plantation Dr. Clute, Texas 77531.
Her final resting place will be in Lake Charles, LA, where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband and her son, Eddie.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brittany Caperton for always stepping in with love and support, especially during times when it was needed most.
Her legacy is one of love, perseverance, and devotion to family. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
You saw me take my first breath, and I saw you take your last. —Kaye
