Leslie Jones Stein of Lake Jackson passed away on July 4, 2023, surrounded by her children at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas from complications of breast cancer. Leslie was the daughter of Ronald Jones and Kay Woods Jones. She was born on September 17, 1961, at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, where her mother had evacuated from Lake Jackson due to Hurricane Carla.
Leslie grew up in Lake Jackson until 1976 when her family moved to Midland, Michigan and later to Russellville, Arkansas, where she graduated from high school in 1980. Leslie received her Bachelor of Arts from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas in 1984. She also received a Master’s in Education from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas in 1998. For over 25 years she was an elementary school teacher, with a specialization in reading/literacy. She taught in numerous schools located in Richardson, Texas; Metairie, Louisiana and San Antonio, Texas. Teaching was not just a job to Leslie, it was her passion. She was a gifted educator who truly cared about every single student in her classroom and undoubtedly impacted the lives of countless students during her career.
Leslie was diagnosed with aggressive triple-negative breast cancer on March 17, 2022. Over the next 11 months, she underwent multiple surgeries, as well as arduous chemotherapy and radiation treatments that were challenging on so many fronts. But she did it all with dignity… with grace…and always with a smile and a kind word to every person who treated her.
Leslie is survived by her sons, Stuart Stein of San Antonio, Texas and Preston Stein (Peyton) of Bryan, Texas, both of whom she loved beyond measure, and by her grandchildren, Hadley Wren Stein and Hayes Parker Stein of Bryan, Texas to whom she will always be remembered as their treasured “Nana”. She is also survived by her father, Ronald A. Jones and her sisters Kellie Chaney (Jim) and Kaycie Moore (Randy) all of Lake Jackson, Texas, as well as by nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Kay Woods Jones, and her infant sister, Wendy.
Leslie was a dedicated mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She will forever be missed. Rest easy Leslie Kay.
In honor of Leslie’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held by the family.
