Born on October 16, 1942, in Lansing, Michigan, Robert lived a life defined by service, skill, humor, and deep devotion to his family and community. He graduated from Brazosport High School in 1960 before earning his undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran University. He went on to attend medical school and complete his residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he discovered his calling in orthopedic surgery. He served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Captain.
Dr. Kilian began his private orthopedic practice in 1974 and faithfully served his community for 46 years, retiring in 2020. Throughout his long career, he restored mobility, eased pain, and improved the lives of countless patients. He was known not only for his steady hands and sharp clinical judgment but also for his warm bedside manner and quick wit that could put anyone at ease.
Beyond medicine, Robert embraced life with enthusiasm. He was a licensed pilot who loved the freedom of the open sky, and he found equal joy on the water sailing or fishing. Hunting trips, traveling, mechanical projects, and time spent restoring old trucks and tractors brought him great satisfaction. He was naturally gifted with tools in hand and rarely met a machine he couldn’t fix. Some of his happiest moments were spent at his ranch in San Saba, Texas where he enjoyed the outdoors and the quiet beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
Robert will be remembered for his fun-loving spirit, sharp sense of humor, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family. He had a passion for teaching, a knack for problem-solving, and a steady presence that brought comfort and confidence to those around him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Patty Kilian; his sister, Susan, and her husband, James Holt; his children, Dennis (Lori), Barbara, Darek and daughter-in-law Carie; and his cherished grandchildren, Scott, Kyle, Isobel, Reason, and Avery. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Duane Jack Kilian and Carolyn Cox Kilian; his brothers, Richard “Dick” Kilian and David Kilian; and his son, Richard Bruce Kilian.
Dr. Robert Jack Kilian leaves behind a legacy of healing, hard work, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
