Maria was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1927 and made Florida her home in 1944. She is preceded by her father Ramon Colon, mother Laura Rivera, sisters Anna, Amelia and brother Jose Antonio. Surviving Maria were her brother Wilfredo Colon, son Randolph Greo and daughters Maria Valazquez and Sandra Astacio. She had 8 grandchildren; Richard Valazquez, Marianela Valazquez, Heather Harkness, Alexander Greo, Brandon Human, Ciera Schumaker, Charles Bell and Lucas Astacio, followed by a beautiful multitude of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her family extended from a life-long cherished friend, Margie Vazquez to many within our local community that knew Maria for her selfless love and kindness.
Maria’s passions included her faith, gardening, shopping, cooking and of course, loving those whom were entrusted to her care. Beginning at the young age of 17, she was a professional Nanny and then after raising her children, sought a career in the medical profession. She spent 38 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant sharing her gift of mercy to those suffering and earned her “angel wings” during this time. She was known for her honest candor, unbridled humor and gentle presence. A sense of style, timeless beauty and sincere joy were her trademarks.
The family would like to take the opportunity to humbly thank Hospice of St. Francis for their loving extension of care and dedication during this most challenging season.
