Derek attended aviation camp, thanks to uncle Don, and became in love with it. He had a chance to fly a private plane and was so proud. He spent his younger-years in Miramar, Florida where he watched his dad draw on clothing and became fascinated with art. He excelled at art in middle and high school. He graduated Langston Hughes High School and attended The Arts Institute of Atlanta. He worked in and around the airport for many years. He was a mechanic for AC sweepers and was very proud of the work that he did.
He leaves behind a fiancé, Faith Johnson and beloved son Asher Lewis; his parents, Mr. Derek Paul Lewis I and Mrs. Stephanie Lewis; sisters, Rosemarie and Xiomara Lewis; a brother Quame’ Lewis; nieces, DeMari, Kinsley, and Riley; a nephew, Benjamin; Grandfather Kenneth McCottry of New Jersey; aunts, Sharline, Akilah, Zubidah, Shaundra, Courtney, Gwenda and Diane; uncles, Kahlil, Rudolph, Jorel, Alexander, Romelo and Vance.
Derek also had close cousins that he considered brothers, they would take “Boys trips” and go shooting at the gun range. Dru Simpson, Preston Boyd, Davontae Bryant (preceeded in death 1 month earlier), Jason Shaw, and Danny. We will miss and never forget our “Pop”, “Sito”, “Lil Derek” and most proud name ever given “Daddy”.
Derek would also tell anyone that would listen that his church was “Crown Ministries" in Brooklyn, NY. His favorite bible verse: Matthew 11:27 "All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him."
Derek will be missed by all his family and friends.
