Diane attended The Immaculate Conception Catholic School and enjoyed science, math and literature.
In the fall of 1959, Diane would attend Howard University in Washington, D.C and earn her bachelor’s degree. Soon after, she would move to San Francisco, California to attend UCSF where she would later receive her M.D. in Anesthesiology, and meet and marry Dr. Leroy Chauffe, a chemist and chair of the department at Cal State Hayward.
In 198 I , Diane was recruited by Parkway Medical Hospital in Georgia and moved to Atlanta, where four years later she would welcome a daughter, Alma, and in 1989, have a son Christian, whom she adored.
She had a tremendous love for her children, friends and family and would often talk to them for hours at a time and would often plan visits or send gifts out of the blue. She was known for her impeccable style and standards, her laugh and spunk, holiday meals, her dedication to mind — body and soul health, her fortitude, fond stories of the years gone by and her fun spirit. She advocated education, wise money management, investing and cultural awareness.
Having attained many awards, recognitions and certifications, Diane was a kindhearted, empathetic, ambitious woman and high achiever, who encouraged all those around her to be the best that they could be. A steadfast believer in lifelong learning and education, Diane’s perpetual philanthropic and humanitarian contributions to her local community, alumni organizations and the global community at large never went unnoticed.
She loved her alma mater Howard University and was a loyal Bison and Delta Sigma Theta. She often attended Homecoming and enjoyed her class reunions with lifelong friends.
Diane’s favorite pastime was traveling the globe especially to the Caribbean islands — where she lived part time and Paris, France. Oftentimes a friend or two would accompany her but it was not uncommon for “Di” to travel alone. In addition, Diane’s other interests included French, Tai Chi, dancing, live music and laughter, genealogy research, providing educational and nutritional resources for underserved communities and advocating for socio-economic, racial and political justice.
Despite her recent illness she remained determined, strong-willed and courageous while trusting in God’s plan.
God called Dr. Diane Chauffe to her heavenly home on Sunday, October 30'h, 2o29, at 4:00 am after her battle with the rare Light-chain Amyloidosis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Landon Lewis.
