Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday April 30 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Funeral services are set for Friday May 1 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bryan. A family burial will be held in Stephenville on Saturday.
Bluefford was born January 13, 1925 to Joe and Cressie (Dawson) Hancock in Stephenville, Texas. After graduation from Stephenville High School he joined the Army to proudly serve in WWII and was discharged as a Sergeant at the age of 19. Bluefford married Katie Harris on June 20, 1947. He graduated from Tarleton State College in 1948 with a degree in Agriculture. He and Katie moved to College Station in 1948 and he earned a degree in Horticulture in 1950 and a master’s in Horticulture in 1957 from Texas A&M University. In 1950 Bluefford was hired by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and after 35 years of service retired in 1985.
In retirement he never slowed down. He and Katie traveled to Europe, took their children and families all over the U.S. and helped to raise all their grandchildren. Bluefford was a faithful Christian and taught the Hancock Class Men’s Bible Class and was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Bryan. He was a Boy Scout leader, member of Kiwanis, 42 player, fisherman, pecan consultant and peach judge. But the hat he loved best was maroon and had Texas A&M on it.
Bluefford will be greatly missed by his family and friends but he will also be remembered by so many whose lives he touched through the love of Horticulture and the Peach and Pecan Industry.
Bluefford is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Katie, two sons, Judson and Joe, daughter, Penny Hervey, and sons-in-law, Scott Hervey and Chris Eddens.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Cindy Hancock, Jubal and Nika Hancock; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Bob Grimes, Kathy Eddens, Lucy and Jay Givens; eleven grandsons, five granddaughters, and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank HealthQuest Home Health, St. Joseph Manor, Dr. Denise Turner and Hospice Brazos Valley for the loving care given to our father.
